Hi. My name’s Mieke Boerema and I’m an author-illustrator living in Margaret River, Western Australia. I enjoy being active and exploring the outdoors, ocean swimming, trail running and surfing the challenging waves that brought me to the West. I’m part of the local circus school, tumbling through the air and giving me the idea to make life itself a juggling act. I balance a part-time career as a physiotherapist with part-time illustrating and creative writing.
I appreciate the role that books play in sparking imagination, curiosity and creativity as well as developing early language and literacy skills. I believe books are key to fostering relationships between children and family, teachers and friends – all the while inspiring a love of lifelong reading.
My illustrations are generally done with watercolours, which allows a playful use of colour and a freedom for the paint to bend and flow with a sense of fun and movement. Each new text I illustrate provides an opportunity to weave words with colour so that together they tell the story.
I’m currently working on writing and illustrating three of my own books as well as illustrating for two local writers. My illustrations extend to logo and graphic art, album covers and wall art, maintaining a fun and colourful style.
My latest illustration work is a story of self belief for our children titled ANYTHING AT ALL.
